Brickell is one of the most prestigious neighborhoods in Miami. Home to the most international banks in the United States, this part of Miami is the heart of the financial district. Along side those banks are some of the most expensive and prestigious homes and condominiums available in South Florida.

All of this was the vision of Mary Brickell. She and her husband, William, opened a trading post on the Miami River in the 1890s. Her husband passed away in 1908 and Mary was left to make her own fortunes. She started by developing land around the bay into what is today, Millionaire's Row. Brickell Avenue was a major thoroughfare by 1911. By 1922, Mrs. Brickell owned all the land from Coconut Grove up to the mouth of the Miami River. Mansions built in the first three decades of the 1900s were a common sight.

Today, Brickell has remained the most prestigious neighborhood in Miami. Many of the mansions are gone, but a few gems remain. One major property still remaining that was part of Mrs. Brickell's lands is Vizcaya, the estate of James Deering. The city of Miami owns the estate today and run it as a museum and gardens.

There are single family houses in Brickell, but most are not on the waterfront any longer. High rises are the mainstay of modern Brickell. It started with high-rises going up in the 1960s along Brickell Avenue for banks and related services. High-rise residential towers went up in South Brickell soon after. During the 1980s, many of the mansions began making way for high-rise condominiums along the water front.

Brickell homes are among the most expensive in the Miami-Dade area. They sit on unusually large lots and command comparable prices. Most are within walking distance of Mary Brickell Village where boutique shops and restaurants abound. Waterfront apartments in Brickell are among the most sought after in South Florida. Many Brickell condos for sale sit along the water's edge with views inland and over the ocean.
